GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) — Two neural networks competing against each other — a generator creates fake data, a discriminator tries to detect fakes. They improve together until the generator produces data indistinguishable from real. Invented by Ian Goodfellow in 2014. Powered early image generation before diffusion models took over.
